Simvastatin belongs to the drug class known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, also called statins. A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way. These drugs are often used to treat similar conditions.

Zocor 10mg How To Take

Take Zocor 10mg tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. If you take the tablets once a day, it is best to take your dose tin the evening hours (like with the evening meal) or at bedtime. You may take this drug with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Mechanism Action Of Zocor 10mg

Simvastatin is a prodrug in which the 6-membered lactone ring of simvastatin is hydrolyzed in vivo to generate the beta, delta-dihydroxy acid, an active metabolite structurally similar to HMG-CoA (hydroxymethylglutaryl CoA). Once hydrolyzed, simvastatin competes with HMG-CoA for HMG-CoA reductase, a hepatic microsomal enzyme. Interference with the activity of this enzyme reduces the quantity of mevalonic acid, a precursor of cholesterol.

Warning

Myopathy and Rhabdomyolysis – This Tablet may increase the risk of Myopathy and Rhabdomyolysis which is a muscular disease. The risk of causing Myopathy is higher in the elderly population, and hence it should be used with caution.

Alcohol consumption – This Tablet should be used with caution in patients who consume large quantities of alcohol and/or have a history of the chronic liver disease.

Pediatric use – The safety and efficacy of Zocor 10mg Tablet have not been established in the children less than 10 years of age.
