Zocor 40mg How To Work

Zocor 40mg tablet is a lipid-lowering medication (statin). It works by blocking an enzyme (HMG-CoA-reductase) that is required in the body to make cholesterol. It thus lowers “bad” cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides and raises “good” cholesterol (HDL).

What Is Zocor 40mg

Zocor 40mg is a cholesterol-lowering medication that blocks the production of cholesterol (a type of fat) in the body.

This reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and total cholesterol in the blood. Lowering your cholesterol can help prevent heart disease and hardening of the arteries, conditions that can lead to heart attack, stroke, and vascular disease.

Zocor 40mg How To Take

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Zocor 40mg tablet is to be taken with food.

Mechanism Action Of Zocor 40mg

Simvastatin is a prodrug in which the 6-membered lactone ring of simvastatin is hydrolyzed in vivo to generate the beta, delta-dihydroxy acid, an active metabolite structurally similar to HMG-CoA. Once hydrolyzed, simvastatin competes with HMG-CoA for HMG-CoA reductase, a hepatic microsomal enzyme. Interference with the activity of this enzyme reduces the quantity of mevalonic acid, a precursor of cholesterol.

Warning

Pregnancy – This is not recommended for pregnant women.

Breast-feeding – This is not recommended for breastfeeding women.

Cognitive impairment – This Tablet can cause forgetfulness, memory loss and confusion. These side effects are reversible once the medicine is stopped.

Increases blood sugar levels – This Tablet may increase the blood glucose levels. Monitoring of blood glucose levels is necessary while you are on this medicine.

Myopathy and Rhabdomyolysis – Zocor 40mg Tablet may increase the risk of Myopathy and Rhabdomyolysis which is a muscular disease. The risk of causing Myopathy is higher in the elderly population, and hence it should be used with caution.

Alcohol consumption – This Tablet should be used with caution in patients who consume large quantities of alcohol and/or have a history of the chronic liver disease.

Pediatric use – The safety and efficacy of Zocor 40mg Tablet have not been established in the children less than 10 years of age.

Precaution

You have been prescribed Zocor 40mg tablet for the treatment of high cholesterol.

It decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks.

It should be taken in addition to regular exercise and low-fat diet to lower levels of fat in the blood.

It should be taken in the evening after dinner and before sleeping.

In general, this tablet is safe. However, some people may develop digestive problems like diarrhoea, gas. If any of these happen to you, take it with food.

Notify your doctor if you experience muscle symptoms (pain or weakness), joint pain, do not feel hungry, or if you have yellow eyes, skin or dark urine after starting the medication.
