Zocor 20mg How To Work

Zocor 20mg tablet is a lipid-lowering medication (statin). It works by blocking an enzyme (HMG-CoA-reductase) that is required in the body to make cholesterol. It thus lowers “bad” cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides and raises “good” cholesterol (HDL).

What Is Zocor 20mg

Zocor 20mg belongs to a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or “statins.” Simvastatin reduces levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL).

This is used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides (types of fat) in the blood.

It is also used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors.

This is used in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.

Mechanism Action Of Zocor 20mg

Simvastatin is a prodrug in which the 6-membered lactone ring of simvastatin is hydrolyzed in vivo to generate the beta, delta-dihydroxy acid, an active metabolite structurally similar to HMG-CoA. Once hydrolyzed, simvastatin competes with HMG-CoA for HMG-CoA reductase, a hepatic microsomal enzyme. Interference with the activity of this enzyme reduces the quantity of mevalonic acid, a precursor of cholesterol.

It decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks. It should be taken in addition to regular exercise and low-fat diet to lower levels of fat in the blood.

It should be taken in the evening after dinner and before sleeping.
