When Is Cialis Going Generic

What is a Cialis generic?

Description

It is simply a version of tadalafil that is not name-brand. Ultimately, you should expect generics to have the same active ingredient (tadalafil), dosage strength, and form of administration. The inactive ingredients may vary from name-brand to generic and from one generic brand to another generic brand.Another main difference between Cialis and generics is the amount of research that has gone into name-brand, or any name-brand drug for that matter. When a pharmaceutical company wants to develop a new medication, there are several stages and phases that the new product must endure before it is approved for the general publicSuch phases include studying the biochemistry of what the medication is trying to treat or cure, chemical compound preparation, candidate drug evaluation, and finally several stages of clinical trials. Then all of the research is neatly presented to the FDA, who will determine if the drug can be sold to the general public.

Are there any cheaper medications I can try for ED?

While Cialis doesn’t have a generic yet, there are other options to consider.

  • First and possibly most important—Viagra has gone generic, and it is much more affordable.  Prices with a GoodRx coupon are as little as $25 per pill, depending on which pharmacy you choose. For more information on Viagra’s generic, sildenafil, see our blog post here.
  • Compare prices (whether you have insurance or not). Look at Cialis vs Viagra (sildenafil) or Levitra (vardenafil)—other common choices in the same class—along with Stendra (avanafil) and Staxyn (vardenafil). They may or may not be cheaper now—but both do offer manufacturer coupons and patient assistance programs, which Cialis does not. See manufacturer offers for Viagra here and Levitra here.
  • If you have insurance, check your coverage. Many plans don’t cover ED drugs, but some will offer coverage for one or two preferred brands. You may be able to pay less at the pharmacy for Viagra or Levitra.
  • For more information on Cialis side effects, and how Cialis compares to other ED medications, check out Iodine’s comparisons with Viagra here and Levitra here. As always, you’ll want to discuss with your doctor if you think another medication might work better for you.

How Generic Drug Approval Process Works

Generic drugmakers hoping to market their formulations of a brand-name drug generally submit what are known as abbreviated new drug applications (ANDAs) to the Food and Drug Administration well in advance of the target drug’s patent expiration. Unlike the new drug application, or NDA, submitted to the drug regulatory agency on behalf of a new medication, the ANDA need not contain data from multiple rounds of clinical trials of the drug. It simply must satisfy the agency that the proposed generic version is bioequivalent to the brand-name drug for which it will be an alternative.

Drug interactions

Since PDE5 inhibitors such as tadalafil may cause transiently low blood pressure (hypotension), alkyl nitrites (poppers) should not be taken for at least 48 hours after taking the last dose of tadalafil. Using poppers (such as the sex drug amyl nitrite) within this timeframe may increase the risk of life-threatening hypotension.Since people who have taken tadalafil within the past 48 hours cannot take organic nitrates to relieve angina (such as glyceryl trinitrate spray), these patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience anginal chest pain.[5] In the event of a medical emergency, paramedics and medical personnel should be notified of any recent doses of tadalafil.Tadalafil is metabolized predominantly by the hepatic CYP3A4 enzyme system. The presence of other drugs which induce this system can shorten tadalafil half-life and reduce serum levels, and hence efficacy, of the drug.

DOSAGE

For Use As NeededThe recommended starting dose of Cialis for use as needed in most patients is 10 mg, taken prior to anticipated sexual activity. The dose may be increased to 20 mg or decreased to 5 mg, based on individual efficacy and tolerability. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day in most patients.Cialis for use as needed was shown to improve erectile function compared to placebo up to 36 hours following dosing. Therefore, when advising patients on optimal use of Cialis, this should be taken into consideration.

For Once Daily Use

The recommended starting dose of Cialis for once daily use is 2.5 mg, taken at approximately the same time every day, without regard to timing of sexual activity. The Cialis dose for once daily use may be increased to 5 mg, based on individual efficacy and tolerability.Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Cialis.
