What is mupirocin topical?

Mupirocin is an antibiotic that prevents bacteria from growing on your skin.

Mupirocin topical (for use on the skin) is used to treat skin infections such as impetigo (IM-pe-TYE-go) or a "Staph" infection of the skin.

Mupirocin is used to treat certain skin infections (such as impetigo). It is an antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.

How to use Mupirocin Ointment

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start using mupirocin and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Use this medication only on the skin. Clean and dry the affected area first. Then apply a small amount of ointment to the area as directed by your doctor, usually 3 times a day. You may cover the treated area with a bandage.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Continue to use it for the full time prescribed, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection.

Side effects:

This medication may cause burning, stinging, itching or pain at first as your body adjusts to it. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Seek immediate medical attention if a rash or severe itching occurs.Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a new infection (e.g., fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice signs of a new infection.This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
