What Is Hcg Diet

What Is Hcg Diet

What Is HCG?

HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone present at high levels in early pregnancy.

In fact, this hormone is used as a marker in home pregnancy tests.

HCG has also been used to treat fertility issues in both men and women.

However, elevated blood levels of HCG may also be a symptom of several types of cancer, including placental, ovarian and testicular cancer.

A British doctor named Albert Simeons first proposed HCG as a weight loss tool in 1954.

His diet consisted of two main components:

  • An ultra-low-calorie diet of around 500 calories per day.
  • The HCG hormone administered via injections.

Today, HCG products are sold in various forms, including oral drops, pellets and sprays. They are also available through countless websites and some retail stores.

Does HCG Help You Lose Weight?

Proponents of the HCG diet claim that it boosts metabolism and helps you lose large amounts of fat — all without feeling hungry.

Various theories attempt to explain HCG’s weight loss mechanisms.

However, multiple studies have concluded that weight loss achieved by the HCG diet is due to ultra-low-calorie intake alone and has nothing to do with the HCG hormone.

These studies compared the effects of HCG and placebo injections given to individuals on a calorie-restricted diet.

Weight loss was identical or nearly identical between the two groups.

Furthermore, these studies determined that the HCG hormone did not significantly reduce hunger.

Is the hCG Diet Really Dangerous?

"HCG doesn’t work for weight loss. Period," says Dr. Charlie Seltzer, a physician in Philadelphia with a specialization in weight loss. "If it did, there would be no need to put a calorie-restriction on it. You could just eat what you want and watch the fat melt off. This is, obviously, not the case. So, they attach a 500 calorie per day diet to it so that the HCG 'works.' It is the severe calorie restriction that causes weight loss, which is also what sets you up for massive rebound weight gain. At best, during the calorie restriction, you will be miserable. At worst, you could end up with nutritional deficiencies, an absence of menstruation, and injury if you try to exercise on such low calories. HCG is a big fat no-go in my book."

What Is the Function of HCG in Your Body?

HCG is a protein-based hormone produced during pregnancy that tells a woman's body that it's pregnant.

HCG helps maintain the production of important hormones like progesterone and estrogen, which are essential for the development of the embryo and fetus.

After the first three months of pregnancy, blood levels of HCG decrease.
