What is sildenafil?

Sildenafil relaxes muscles found in the walls of blood vessels and increases blood flow to particular areas of the body.Sildenafil under the name Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men.Another brand of sildenafil is Revatio, which is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and improve exercise capacity in men and women.

Why it's used

Sildenafil oral tablet is used to treat ED and PAH. Generic oral tablets are available for both conditions, but the brand-name drugs each treat only one of the conditions.

  • Viagra: This drug is used to treat ED. With ED, you’re unable to get or maintain an erection.
  • Revatio: This drug is used to treat PAH. With PAH, the blood pressure in your lungs is too high. Your heart has to work very hard to pump blood into your lungs.

Side effects

According to clinical trial results, the most common side effects include:

  • headaches
  • nasal congestion
  • impaired vision
  • photophobia (sensitivity to light)
  • dyspepsia (indigestion)

Less commonly, some users have experienced cyanopsia, where everything appears to have a tinted blue tinge.In very rare cases, Viagra use can lead to nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or damage to the optic nerve.

Sildenafil Actavis (sildenafil citrate) 25 mg are white to off-white coloured, diamond shaped, biconvex, film coated tablets with "U" debossed on one side and "25" debossed on other side.Sildenafil Actavis (sildenafil citrate) 50 mg are white to off-white coloured, diamond shaped, biconvex, film coated tablets with "U" debossed on one side and "50" debossed on other side.Sildenafil Actavis (sildenafil citrate) 100 mg are white to off-white coloured, diamond shaped, biconvex, film coated tablets with "U" debossed on one side and "100" debossed on other side.

FDA and sildenafil 20mg

The FDA has approved the 25mg, 50mg and 100mg pills to treat erectile dysfunction. The FDA has not approved the 20mg pill for erectile dysfunction, but has approved them for pulmonary hypertension. If you take the 20mg for erectile dysfunction then you are taking it off-label.
