Topiramate Generic

Topiramate

Topiramate (Topamax) is an inexpensive drug used to treat seizures in adults or children with epilepsy. It is also used for the prevention of migraine headaches. This drug is slightly more popular than comparable drugs. It is available in brand and generic versions. Generic topiramate is covered by most Medicare and insurance plans, but some pharmacy coupons or cash prices may be lower. The lowest GoodRx price for the most common version of topiramate is around $8.69, 89% off the average retail price of $81.73. Compare anti-epileptics.

Uses

Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to prevent and control seizures (epilepsy). This medication is also used to prevent migraine headaches and decrease how often you get them. Topiramate will not treat a migraine headache once it occurs. If you get a migraine headache, treat it as directed by your doctor (such as by taking pain medication, lying down in a dark room).Topiramate is known as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug.

How to use Topamax

Read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start taking topiramate and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily. Swallow the tablets whole since breaking them may leave a bitter taste. To prevent kidney stones from forming, drink plenty of liquids while taking this medication unless your doctor instructs you otherwise.

Why it's used

Topiramate oral tablet is used to:

  • treat certain types of seizures alone (without use of other drugs). The seizures treated are partial onset seizures and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
  • treat certain types of seizures in combination with other drugs. The seizures treated are partial onset seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
  • prevent migraine headaches.

How it works

Topiramate belongs to a class of drugs called sulfamate-substituted monosaccharide anticonvulsants or antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way. These drugs are often used to treat similar conditions. It isn’t known exactly how this drug works. It’s thought that it works on certain chemicals, channels, receptors, and enzymes in your brain to help control seizures and prevent migraines.
