What is Topiramate?

Topiramate is often sold under the brand name Topamax. It is an anti-convulsive drug that stands apart from all other drugs used to treat convulsions or mood disorders because it does not share the same chemical composition. Medical researchers currently do not know how Topiramate works.

Take topiramate exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.There is another medication with a name similar to the brand name for topiramate. Talk to your pharmacist to be sure that you are given topiramate. If you think you were given the wrong medication, talk to your pharmacist. What dosage is appropriate for starting a course of Topiramate?

The initial dose for Topiramate should be either 12.5 or 25 milligrams taken either once or twice a day. This dose increases by 12.5 or 12 milligrams each week until it reaches the final level, which depends on the use of the drug and how the patient is responding. A typical final dosage is between 100 and 200 mg per day, although some patients benefit from no more than 50 mg. The case of PTSD entails a final dose of approximately 175 mg per day and generally not exceeding 500 mg per day.

Side Effect

Topiramate may cause other side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • numbness, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet
  • slowed reactions
  • nervousness
  • headache
  • drowsiness
  • weakness
  • uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
  • uncontrollable eye movements
  • weight loss

Topamax Warnings

Topamax can lead to serious eye problems that, if left untreated, could cause permanent vision loss. These include a sudden decrease in vision that may be accompanied by eye pain and redness, as well as a blockage of fluid in the eye resulting in secondary angle closure glaucoma.Topamax might decrease sweating and increase your body temperature resulting in a fever. Some people may need to be hospitalized if this occurs.

What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Tablets and extended-release capsules should be stored at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Sprinkle capsules should be stored at or below 77°F (25°C). Never store broken tablets, capsules, or mixtures of sprinkles and soft food. These should be used right away or discarded.
