Topical Dutasteride

Topical Dutasteride

About Topical Dutasteride

Since 2014 Alvi Armani has also offered a second topical solution with Dutasteride. Dutasteride is a more powerful DHT inhibitor in that it prevents two enzymes, 5 alpha reductase type 1 and type II (finasteride blocks only type II) from converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, the primary hormone that causes male patterned hair loss. With the improved conversion prevention rate and longer half-life of Dutasteride when compared to finasteride, hair loss sufferers have reported an increased degree of hair growth and fewer side effects than the already lowered side effects of topical finasteride when compared.

Why Topical?

Oral medications are typically very effective for addressing various conditions but unfortunately side effects, if they exist, are usually difficult to isolate due to the medication entering the blood stream. This is known as systemic absorption. This is why topical alternatives are preferable as there is little to no systemic absorption but this benefit comes at the cost of efficacy. Topical formulations usually are not as effective as their oral counterparts. However, if a delivery system can be devised to allow for nearly equal results as the oral counterparts then the likelihood of side effects will decrease. Thankfully, we have effective delivery systems today that help us to provide effective DHT inhibition with a greatly reduced potential of side effects.

Topical Dutasteride is only available to Alvi Armani patients who have had a hair restoration procedure with us or individuals who are patients of Dr. Baubac’s and have had an in person consultation and evaluation done by him. The medication is only available per prescription though Dr. Baubac and our pharmacy.

Does Dutasteride (Avodart) Increase Prostate Cancer Risk?

Results of a four-year study show that men who took dutasteride (Avodart), a drug commonly prescribed for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), were less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. However, men taking dutasteride who did develop prostate cancer were more likely to have more deadly tumors—those with a high Gleason score—than men who took a placebo. The study appears in The New England Journal of Medicine (April 2010).

All of the 6,729 men enrolled in the study were at high risk for prostate cancer but believed to be disease-free when the study began. Prostate biopsies were done at two and four years. Although 25 percent of men who took placebo developed prostate cancer compared with 20 percent of those who took Avodart, investigators are unsure whether dutasteride helped prevent the development of cancer or whether it suppressed PSA levels.
