What is tamsulosin (Flomax)?

Tamsulosin is an alpha-blocker that relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate.

Tamsulosin is used to improve urination in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

Tamsulosin is not approved for use in women or children.

What is tamsulosin used for?

Relieving the urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. Tamsulosin helps improve symptoms such as needing to pass urine frequently or urgently, but having a weak flow of urine or being unable to fully empty the bladder when you do go.

How does tamsulosin work?

Tamsulosin is a type of medicine called and alpha-blocker. It works by blocking alpha receptors that are found in the muscle in the prostate gland.

The prostate gland, which is found only in men, lies at the top of the tube connecting the bladder to the outside (urethra). The prostate gland often enlarges with advancing age, pressing on the urethra and obstructing the flow of urine from the bladder. This can cause various symptoms, such as difficulty passing urine, being unable to completely empty the bladder and needing to pass urine more often or urgently.

Tamsulosin causes the muscle in the prostate to relax. This relieves the pressure on the urethra and allows urine to flow freely past the prostate gland. This makes it easier to pass urine and empty the bladder.
