How should I take topiramate?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.Topiramate can be taken with or without food.Swallow the tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it. The Trokendi XR extended-release capsule must be swallowed whole. Do not break or open.

Topiramate oral tablet is used to:

treat certain types of seizures alone (without use of other drugs). The seizures treated are partial onset seizures and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.treat certain types of seizures in combination with other drugs. The seizures treated are partial onset seizures, primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

How it works

Topiramate belongs to a class of drugs called sulfamate-substituted monosaccharide anticonvulsants or antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way. These drugs are often used to treat similar conditions.

The more common side effects of topiramate

  • tingling in your arms and legs.
  • increased bleeding (such as nosebleeds)
  • increased bruising.
  • loss of appetite.
  • nausea.
  • a change in the way foods taste.
  • diarrhea.
  • weight loss.


Using this medicine while you are pregnant can harm your unborn baby. Use an effective form of birth control to keep from getting pregnant. If you think you have become pregnant while using this medicine, tell your doctor right away.Birth control pills containing estrogen may not work properly if you take them with topiramate. To keep from getting pregnant, use an additional form of birth control together with your birth control pill. If you have any questions about this, check with your doctor or pharmacist.


  • This drug must be stored at the right temperature. Store the tablets at room temperature between 59°F (15°C) and 86°F (30°C).
  • Keep this drug in a tightly closed container.
  • Don’t store this medication in moist or damp areas, such as bathrooms.
