What is ibandronate (Boniva)?

Boniva is a bisphosphonate (bis FOS fo nayt) medicine that alters bone formation and breakdown in the body. This can slow bone less and may help prevent bone fractures.Ibandronate is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in women after menpause.Ibandronate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What are the possible side effects of ibandronate (Boniva)?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: wheezing, difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using ibandronate and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • chest pain, new or worsening heartburn;
  • difficulty or pain when swallowing;
  • pain or burning under the ribs or in the back;
  • severe heartburn, burning pain in your upper stomach, or coughing up blood;
  • new or unusual pain in your thigh or hip;
  • jaw pain, numbness, or swelling;
  • severe joint, bone, or muscle pain; or
  • low calcium levels--muscle spasms or contractions, numbness or tingly feeling (around your mouth, or in your fingers and toes).

Common side effects may include:

  • heartburn
  • pain in your arms or legs;or
  • chills, tiredness, symptoms.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Tell your doctor if any of the following side effects become severe or don't go away:

  • Headache
  • Back pain
  • Redness or swelling of the eyes
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or upset stomach
  • Redness or swelling at the injection site (if you receive a Boniva injection)
  • Pain in your arms or legs
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Frequent urination

Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of the symptoms listed in the Boniva Warnings section above, or any of the following serious side effects:

  • New or worsening heartburn
  • Chest pain
  • New or unusual pain in the hips or thighs
  • Difficult or painful swallowing
  • Pain or burning sensation under the ribs or in the back
  • Rash
  • Signs of  a severe allergic reaction (may include hives, rash, itching, chest tightness, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat)

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

  • Bladder pain
  • bloody or cloudy urine
  • chest pain
  • cough producing mucus
  • difficult, burning, or painful urination
  • difficulty with breathing
  • fever or chills
  • frequent urge to urinate
  • lower back or side pain
  • nervousness
  • pounding in the ears
  • shortness of breath
  • slow or fast heartbeat
  • sneezing
  • sore throat
  • tightness in the chest

Less common

  • Bloody or cloudy urine
  • body aches or pain
  • congestion
  • difficulty with swallowing
  • dizziness
  • dryness of the throat
  • fast heartbeat
  • frequent urge to urinate
  • hives
  • hoarseness
  • itching
  • numbness
  • puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  • runny nose
  • skin rash
  • tender, swollen glands in the neck
  • tingling
  • unusual tiredness or weakness
  • voice changes
