What Is Primidone (Mysoline)?

Primidone is the generic form of the brand-name drug Mysoline, which is used to treat and prevent seizures.The medicine can be used alone or combined with other treatments. It's also used to treat essential tremor and other neurological conditions.

Primidone is in a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants. It works by reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved primidone in 1954. It's marketed as Mysoline by Valeant Pharmaceuticals, and as generic primidone by several drug manufacturers

Primidone Interactions

Tell your doctor about all prescription, non-prescription, illegal, recreational, herbal, nutritional, or dietary drugs you’re taking, especially those listed in the Primidone Warnings section above, and any of the following:

  • Anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin
  • Disulfiram
  • (Vibramycin)
  • Griseofulvin (Grifulvin)
  • mental illness, or pain
  • Other medications for seizures such as oxcarbazepine Oral contraceptives (birth control pills)
  • Oral steroids such as dexamethasone (Decadron, Dexone) and prednisone (Deltasone)
  • Sleeping pills
  • Tranquilizers

Primidone Dosage

Primidone comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It's typically taken three to four times daily.Try to take this medicine around the same time each day. You can take it with or without food.Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully.Don’t take more or less primidone than is prescribed.Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose of the drug and gradually increase it.
