What Is Prednisolone (Orapred)?

Prednisolone is a prescription medicine sold under the brand name Orapred, among other names.

It's used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Skin problems
  • Kidney problems
  • Arthritis
  • Adrenal problems
  • Eye conditions
  • Blood or bone marrow problems

Prednisolone is a corticosteroid. It works by stopping the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved prednisolone in 1955. It's marketed by various pharmaceutical companies.

Prednisolone Warnings

Steroid medicines, such as prednisolone, can weaken your immune system. This can make you more prone to getting an infection, or it can worsen an infection you already have.

Be sure to tell your doctor about any illness or infection you've recently had before starting on prednisolone. You shouldn't take this medicine if you have a fungal infection anywhere in your body.

Try to avoid being around people who are sick or have infections while you're taking this drug.

Tell your healthcare provider if you're exposed to chicken pox while taking prednisolone.

Don't receive any vaccinations while using this medicine without first talking to your doctor.

Avoid being around others who have recently received "live" virus vaccines. These include measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), oral polio, rotavirus, smallpox, typhoid, yellow fever, varicella (chickenpox), zoster, and nasal flu vaccines.
