Otc Sildenafil

otc sildenafil

Sildenafil is the generic form of Viagra. There are no plans on the record advancing Sildenafil as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication.

The hurdles to market either Sildenafil or Viagra as over-the-counter (OTC) medications would be enormous in the United States. Even in Europe, it proved to be a difficult challenge for Pfizer back in 2008 when they sought to gain approval for OTC sales of Viagra. Concerns about the potential for misuse, the complicated educational material needed to accompany the medication, and the fact that the underlying medical conditions leading to ED would go untreated, left the company no choice but to withdraw its request.

However, in May 2014, Sanofi, the French pharmaceutical company acquired the exclusive rights to apply for the rights to market Cialis OTC from drug company Lilly. When off patent, Sanofi has the right to make all applications for OTC approval in the United States, Australia, Canada, and Europe.

Can You Treat ED with OTC?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) concerns millions of men around the world. In the United States alone, over 30 million men suffer from ED. Men over 70 are more likely to have ED, but even men in their 20s can experience ED.

Types of Treatment

Many treatment options are available for ED management, including:

oral medications

injectable or suppository drugs

medical devices

penile implants

Three prescription medications listed as effective by the Mayo Clinic are:

sildenafil (Viagra)

tadalafil (Cialis)

vardenafil (Levitra and Staxyn)

Fortunately, over-the-counter (OTC) treatments can help with this condition.

Why Viagra Connect is a better choice:

Viagra is a safe drug with a proven efficacy and safety record, in contrast to the other non-prescription products available for ED

You still have to be assessed as suitable, using a specific checklist, so there is minimal risk of you being issued Viagra Connect erroneously, and any other existing risks/risk factors should still be identified

The new P license does not mean that your purchase of Viagra Connect is not likely to be unsafe.

Non-oral drugs

Alternatives to oral medications include:

Penile self-injections: Ceratin medications, such as alprostadil, papaverine, and phentolamine, can be injected directly into the side or base of the penis. These can help achieve or maintain an erection for up to 40 minutes.

Urethral suppository: Very small alprostadil suppositories can be placed in the penile urethra using a special applicator. This stimulates an erection within 10 minutes that can last for up to 60 minutes.

Testosterone replacement: A doctor may suggest this treatment for men whose erectile dysfunction is linked to low levels of testosterone. The testosterone hormone can be delivered by a variety of methods, including injection, patch, or oral medication.
