What Is Ranitidine And How Does It Work?

Ranitidine is a prescription drug used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines and to prevent intestinal ulcers from coming back after they have healed. Ranitidine is also used to treat certain stomach and throat problems such as erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as cough that doesn't go away, stomach pain, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Ranitidine belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 blockers.

How it works

Ranitidine belongs to a class of drugs called histamine receptor antagonists. A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way. These drugs are often used to treat similar conditions.

Ranitidine works by reducing the amount of acid in your stomach.

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center. Symptoms of overdose may include difficulty walking, severe dizziness/fainting.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip themissed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Senior dosage (ages 65 years and older)

The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects.

Your doctor may start you on a lower dosage or a different treatment schedule. This can help keep levels of the drug from building up too much in your body.

Special considerations

If you have moderate or severe kidney disease, your doctor may start you on 150 mg once per day. They may increase the dosage to twice per day.
