Isosorbide Mononitrate

Isosorbide Mononitrate

Isosorbide mononitrate is used to prevent angina (chest pain) caused by coronary artery disease (heart disease). It does not work fast enough to relieve the pain of an angina attack that has already started.

Isosorbide mononitrate belongs to the group of medicines called nitrates. It works by relaxing the blood vessels and increasing the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart while reducing its workload. When used regularly on a long-term basis, this helps prevent angina attacks from occurring.

Isosorbide mononitrate is a prescription drug indicated for the prevention of angina pectoris due to coronary artery disease.

The onset of action of oral isosorbide mononitrate is not sufficiently rapid for this product to be useful in aborting an acute anginal episode.

Isosorbide mononitrate is available under the following different brand names: Imdur, Monoket, and ISMO.

  • abdominal pain
  • abnormal hair texture
  • abnormal heart rhythm
  • abnormal large volume of urine
  • abnormal neck position
  • abnormal vision
  • acne

What is the dose of isosorbide mononitrate and how often should I take it?

The dose of isosorbide mononitrate that's prescribed and how often you need to take it depends on how well your condition is controlled and the brand of isosorbide mononitrate you have been given. It's important that you follow the instructions given by your doctor. These will also be printed on the dispensing label that your pharmacist has put on the packet of medicine. You should also read the patient information leaflet that is provided with your medication.

Your doctor may ask you to take a dose once, twice or three times a day.

Should I take isosorbide mononitrate with or without food?

It doesn't matter. You can take all forms of isosorbide mononitrate either with or without food, on a full or empty stomach.

What should I do if I miss a dose of isosorbide mononitrate?

If you forget to take a dose at your usual time take it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for your next dose. In this case, leave out the forgotten dose and just take your next dose as usual when it's due. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
