is there a generic for Viagra

Generic Viagra: Two versions of sildenafil hit the market today. Viagra has not been available as a generic until now. ... One of the new generics is made by Teva Pharmaceuticals, and the other by Greenstone, a subsidiary of Pfizer, the company that manufactures ViagraViagra and the generic sildenafil, are two of the most popular drugs on the market today. Their popularity has led to thousands of bad jokes and hundreds of cheesy commercials, but how much do you actually know about the infamous erectile dysfunction pill? Here are nine things you should know to get better acquainted with Viagra, and its generic sildenafil.

1) There are multiple manufacturers.

Initially, generic sildenafil was only being manufactured by two companies – Pfizer and Teva. However, since the generic launch back in December 2017, more manufacturers (like Aurobindo, and Cambia) have come to the table, continuing to drive prices down.

2) It comes in multiple dosages.

Just like brand name Viagra, generic sildenafil is sold in tablets of 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg.

3) Prices keep going down.

Yes, you read that right. In December 2017, Pfizer and Teva priced generic sildenafil at 50% off the current brand price – around $30 per tablet. Now, prices per tablet average around $17, and they continue to drop. Stay tuned!

4) Sildenafil is n0 different from brand-name Viagra.

We consistently see patients voice concern about the efficacy of generic drugs. But keep in mind the rigorous process that drugs must go through before they hit the market. These processes ensure that generic medications contain the same active ingredients as their brand-name counterparts, so there are very few differences between them. You can read more from the FDA about this here.

The biggest difference is the color. The ‘little blue pill’ will now be the ‘little white pill.’

Drug alternatives

Oral drugs, including Viagra, are frequently the first course of treatment for men with erectile dysfunction.

Alternative, prescription-only PDE5 inhibitors to Viagra include:

  • Vardenafil: Sold under the brand names Levitra and Staxyn, this drug is available in tablet and disintegrating tablet form. To be effective, take vardenafil one hour before sex. It can be effective for up to 7 hours.
  • Tadalafil: Available under the brand names Adcirca and Cialis, take tadalafil between 1 to 2 hours before sex. These tablets function for 36 hours.
  • Avanafil: Marketed in the U.S. as Stendra, take avanafil tablets 15 to 30 minutes before sex. The effects can last up to 6 hours.

Non-oral drugs

Alternatives to oral medications include:

  • Penile self-injections: Ceratin medications, such as alprostadil, papaverine, and phentolamine, can be injected directly into the side or base of the penis. These can help achieve or maintain an erection for up to 40 minutes.
  • Urethral suppository: Very small alprostadil suppositories can be placed in the penile urethra using a special applicator. This stimulates an erection within 10 minutes that can last for up to 60 minutes.
  • Testosterone replacement: A doctor may suggest this treatment for men whose erectile dysfunction is linked to low levels of testosterone. The testosterone hormone can be delivered by a variety of methods, including injection, patch, or oral medication.
