Ipratropium Bromide

Ipratropium Bromide / Albuterol Combination

Ipratropium bromide / albuterol combination (Combivent) is a type of quick-relief medicine that relaxes the muscles around the airways, helping to open the airways in the lungs.

This medication is an aerosol and is given to your child through an aerosol machine (nebulizer) or metered-dose inhaler (MDI).

What side effects can this medication cause?

  • dry mouth
  • difficulty urinating
  • pain when urinating
  • frequent need to urinate
  • back pain

Uses

Ipratropium is used to treat a runny nose caused by the common cold or seasonal allergies. It works by reducing the amount of fluid/mucus released from inside your nose.

This medication does not relieve symptoms of stuffy nose or sneezing.

PRECAUTIONS

Effects Seen with Anticholinergic Drugs: ATROVENT Nasal Spray (ipratropium bromide nasal spray) 0.03% should be used with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, or bladder neck obstruction, particularly if they are receiving an anticholinergic by another route.

Use in Hepatic or Renal Disease: ATROVENT Nasal Spray (ipratropium bromide nasal spray) 0.03% has not been studied in patients with hepatic or renal insufficiency. It should be used with caution in those patient populations.
