How To Take Azithromycin

How To Take Azithromycin

What Is Azithromycin (Zithromax)?

Azithromycin is the generic name for a prescription drug available as Zithromax, Zmax, and Z-Pak.

The drug is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, such as cat-scratch disease, ear infections, infections of the skin or surrounding tissue, and throat or tonsil infections.

Azithromycin is also used to treat lung and other respiratory infections, such as bronchitis, sinusitis, community acquired pneumonia, some cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and whooping cough (pertussis).

Doctors may also prescribe azithromycin for genital infections and sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhea, infections of the urethra or cervix, genital ulcers, and severe pelvic inflammatory disease.

Azithromycin belongs to group of drugs known as macrolide antibiotics. They work by preventing bacteria from making their own proteins.

side effects of azithromycin

Like all medicines, azithromycin can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. It is considered to be well tolerated with a low incidence of side effects in general. Side effects that are considered to be common include gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhoea, abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, flatulence, taste disturbance), anorexia, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, skin tingling or rashes, visual impairment, deafness, and joint pain.

For a full list of potential side effects and other important information, please read the patient leaflet provided in the pack before starting any course of treatment.

How does azithromycin work?

Azithromycin is usually prescribed for some skin infections, respiratory infections, and sexually transmitted infections. It can also be used to treat travellers' diarrhoea, in adults for whom it is suitable. For sexually transmitted infections, such as Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea, it should be used only after you have been positively tested for the infection.

How should this medicine be used?

Shake the liquid well before each use to mix the medication evenly. Use a dosing spoon, oral syringe, or measuring cup to measure the correct amount of medication. Rinse the measuring device with water after taking the full dose of medication.

If you receive azithromycin powder for suspension (Zithromax) in the single-dose, 1-gram packet, you must first mix it with water before you take the medication. Mix the contents of the 1-gram packet with 1/4 cup (60 mL) of water in a glass and consume the entire contents immediately. Add an additional 1/4 cup (60 mL) of water to the same glass, mix, and consume the entire contents to ensure that you receive the entire dose.

If you receive azithromycin extended-release suspension (Zmax) as a dry powder, you must first add water to the bottle before you take the medication. Open the bottle by pressing down on the cap and twisting. Measure 1/4 cup (60 mL) of water, and add to the bottle. Close the bottle tightly, and shake well to mix. Use the azithromycin extended-release suspension within 12 hours of receiving it from the pharmacy or after adding water to the powder.
