Uses

This medication is used alone or with other medications to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer drug treatment (chemotherapy). It is also used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting after surgery in adults.Granisetron works by blocking one of the body's natural substances (serotonin) that can cause vomiting.

Granisetron Dosage

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Granisetron is usually taken only on the day of treatment with chemotherapy or radiation.

Your doctor may want you to take only one dose, up to 1 hour before chemotherapy or radiation.

For patients undergoing chemotherapy, a second dose of granisetron is sometimes given 12 hours after the first dose. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions very carefully.

Tell your doctor if you forget to take your dose within 1 hour before chemotherapy or radiation. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

Overdose

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center.

Side Effects of Granisetron

Granisetron can cause serious side effects. See "Drug Precautions" section.

Common side effects include:

  • weakness
  • headache
  • stomach pain
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • drowsiness
  • insomnia

Warnings/Precautions:

Abdominal surgery. May mask progressive ileus and/or gastric distention. Pre-existing arrhythmias or cardiac conduction disorders. Cardiac disease, concomitant cardio-toxic chemotherapy or electrolyte abnormalities: increased risk of QT prolongation. Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers.
