Generic Viagra Reviews

What Is Viagra?

Viagra is the brand name of the prescription medicine sildenafil citrate. It’s used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. ED means you can’t get or keep an erection.

This medicine is also sold under the name Revatio to treat adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs). Revatio is given to improve exercise ability and slow down worsening changes in people with this condition.

Additionally, Viagra has been used “off-label” for other medical conditions, such as Raynaud’s disease (a condition that causes fingers and toes to become cold and numb) and prostate cancer.

Viagra is in a class of medicines known as phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis.

How to Get Generic Viagra

If you’re looking for a less costly Viagra, you might want to ask your doctor about sildenafil. It's the active ingredient in both branded Viagra and the drug Revatio, which is a lower dose than Viagra and approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.

The important difference: Generic Revatio is available for a fraction of the cost.

"Generic Revatio is considerably less expensive, and it is the same drug as Viagra with the same safety and effectiveness," says Bradley Anawalt, M.D., an endocrinologist and professor of medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle who chairs the Endocrine Society's Hormone Health Network.

It comes in multiple dosages.

Just like brand name Viagra, generic sildenafil is sold in tablets of 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg.

A different version of sildenafil already exists.

Don’t let this confuse you. Sildenafil is the generic for two common drugs on the market right now, Revatio and Viagra, but these drugs are approved by the FDA for two different uses. Revatio is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, while Viagra treats erectile dysfunction in men.

How can you distinguish between the two? Revatio-equivalent sildenafil is only sold as a 20 mg tablet, while Viagra’s generic sildenafil is sold in 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg tablets. For more on this, see our previous blog

It is available without a prescription in the UK.

The UK just became the first country where patients can buy Viagra over the counter, without a prescription. It is sold under the name Viagra Connect, and is available as a 50 mg tablet for around $25 US dollars for four tablets.

This decision by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (the UK’s version of the FDA) is aimed at reducing the amount of black market, unregulated Viagra tablets sold.

Why is sildenafil cheaper than Viagra?

As a generic medicine, sildenafil is produced by a number of manufacturers, and competition among them helps to regulate its price and keep it affordable for consumers. Branded Viagra is only produced by Pfizer, whose name recognition and customer loyalty allow it to charge a higher price for its renowned ‘little blue pills’.
