Generic Version Of Viagra

Generic Version Of Viagra

Generic Viagra

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries is launching a generic form of Viagra, a popular drug used for erectile dysfunction (ED).  The press release announced that the generic  version would be made available on December 11, 2017.

This new generic Viagra, simply referred to as "sildenafil tablets" on  website, will be available in the same doses as Viagra at approximately half the cost.

Viagra is a PDE5 Inhibitor, which is a class of medications to treat ED, hypertension, and enlarged prostate. One tablet of Viagra could run you around $67.93, and that’s a discounted price. Insurance companies aren’t known for covering lifestyle drugs, like Viagra. Drug coupons are often the way to go, if you want to lower the price.

How popular is Viagra?

On, Viagra is the third most popular PDE5 Inhibitor, a class of medications used for ED, hypertension, and enlarged prostate that also includes Cialis and Revatio. For ED in particular, Viagra is the second most popular drug after Cialis. Tens of million of American men have taken Viagra since it was introduced in 1998.

Popular, but not cheap: Since it has been available only from the brand manufacturer, cash prices for six tablets of Viagra have long been high and even increasing. Currently, the average cash price is around $73 for one tablet. What’s more, few insurance companies cover ED drugs like Viagra, forcing many people to pay out-of-pocket. The good news? A generic could hit pharmacies as soon as December 2017.

How much does generic Viagra cost?

Since Teva will be the only manufacturer with the ability to make generic Viagra, the costs will still be pretty high. The savings will be there if you fill sildenafil though. Once other drug makers are able to manufacture generic Viagra, in April 2020, prices will start dropping significantly.
