What is Viagra?

Viagra is the most well-known of the three as it has been around for over 15 years. This means that a lot is known about its effects and side effects. It works within an hour of taking a tablet, and is best taken on an empty stomach. The effects of Viagra will last for four to six hours.

Viagra was developed and originally marketed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, and until 2013 Pfizer was the only company allowed to sell it. When Pfizer’s patent on Viagra expired, the market was open for other companies to produce the medicine, albeit under its generic name Sildenafil, rather than the brand name Viagra.

How does Generic Viagra work?

Before trying generic Viagra, you need to know how it works. Firstly, you should know that it is classified as a PDE5 inhibitor, and here’s why. When erection happens, the brain sends a signal to the penis, and that releases a special chemical called nitric oxide. It is a chemical messenger needed for stimulating the cGMP enzyme, whose acronym stands for “cyclic guanosine monophosphate”. It relaxes and widens blood vessels in the penis, so that blood can flow to the area in larger amounts, making it erect and keeping it that way until the end of a sexual act.

Erectile dysfunction occurs when cGMP is replaced by a different enzyme called PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5). It breaks down cGMP, taking its place. The unfortunate truth about PDE5 is that it restricts blood flow to the penis, which, of course, results in erectile dysfunction. Generic Viagra specifically blocks the PDE5 enzyme, providing proper blood flow to the penis.

How Generic Pills May Be Different Than Brand-Name Pills

You should know there may be slight cosmetic differences between generic and brand-name drugs. The color, shape, packaging, and labeling of the medicine could vary. Also, generic medicines may have different inactive ingredients, so they might have a different flavoring.

What are Viagra and Sildenafil?

“Viagra” is just a brand name for a drug called Sildenafil. Sildenafil has proven to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction since it is the active ingredient of the drug, and has been available since 2013, when the patent on the “Viagra” brand name expired. It was originally patented by a Brand Company. Since Sildenafil can be produced by any drug company, the competitive market pushes the companies making it to lower the price. Company, however, still owns the Viagra brand, and are not bound by any competition rules, so they set any price they wish.

Dosage

For most patients, the recommended dose is 50 mg taken, as needed, approximately 1 hour before sexual activity. However, Viagra may be taken anywhere from 4 hours to 0.5 hour before sexual activity. Based on effectiveness and toleration, the dose may be increased to a maximum recommended dose of 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day.
