Erectile Dysfunction Young Men

erectile dysfunction young men

Description

Some of the causes for ED in young men include: performance anxiety when the man is too nervous to sustain an erection. depression, schizophrenia, and other psychological disorders. penile abnormalities, such as foreskin problems or curvature.

What is erectile dysfunction?

An erection involves the brain, nerves, hormones, muscles, and circulatory system. These systems work together to fill the erectile tissue in the penis with blood. A man with erectile dysfunction (ED) has trouble getting or maintaining an erection for sexual intercourse. Some men with ED are completely unable to get an erection. Others have trouble maintaining an erection for more than a short time.

There are many possible causes of ED, and many of them are treatable. Read on to learn more about ED’s causes and how it’s treated.

How prevalent is ED?

ED is more prevalent among older men, but it also affects younger men in large numbers. The University of Wisconsin reports an approximate correlation between the percentage of men affected by mild and moderate ED and their decade in life. For example, approximately 50 percent of men in their 50s and 60 percent of men in their 60s have mild ED.

You may feel embarrassed to discuss ED with your healthcare provider. However, having an honest conversation is worth it, as facing the problem head-on can lead to a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Younger men and ED

That oesn’t mean young males can’t have ED or that many don’t.

Goldstein said that it’s just that ED is “pretty rare” until around age 50. That’s when prevalence hits about 52 percent — a higher percentage than the U.K. survey found.

Among men under 40, prevalence of moderate to severe ED is 2–26 percent, according to Dr. Amin Herati, director of men’s health at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Maryland.

But, he did say younger men with ED is a population that’s “overlooked.”

Psychological factors can affect younger patients’ ability to get and maintain erections, for instance, particularly through the use of certain drugs such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) used to treat depression.

What causes erectile dysfunction in young men?

The causes of erectile dysfunction in young men are similar to those for older men, and include both physical and psychological causes. Here are some of the most common:

Psychological causes

Anxiety is the most common cause of erectile dysfunction in young men. This can include nervousness about getting your partner pregnant, losing your erection while putting a condom on, or your sexual performance. This often creates a negative spiral, because failure to achieve an erection causes yet more anxiety and stress. Depression, anxiety and stress can also cause ED by reducing libido.

Narrow blood vessels

High blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking and diabetes can all lead to the narrowing of your blood vessels. This restricts blood flow to the penis and reduces the chance of getting a firm erection. If there is a family history of heart disease in a relation under the age of 40 then your risk is increased.
