Descriptions of Drospirenone And Ethinyl Estradiol

Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol combination is used to prevent pregnancy. It is a birth control pill that contains two types of hormones, ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone, and when taken properly, prevents pregnancy. It works by stopping a woman's egg from fully developing each month. The egg can no longer accept a sperm and fertilization is prevented.

This medicine is also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and acne in women at least 14 years of age. PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Patients with PMDD may have severe emotional and physical symptoms 10 to 14 days before their menstrual flow starts.

Uses of Drospirenone & Ethinyl Estradiol

Drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol is a prescription birth control medicine used:

  • to prevent pregnancy
  • to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD, a mood disorder related to the menstrual cycle)
  • to treat acne in women at least 14 years of age who have started having menstrual periods

What are some other side effects of Ethinyl Estradiol and Drospirenone?

All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

  • Feeling more or less hungry.
  • Weight gain.
  • Headache.
  • Upset stomach or throwing up.
  • Cramps.
  • Bloating.
  • Period (menstrual) changes. These include spotting or bleeding between cycles.
  • Enlarged breasts.
  • Tender breasts.
  • Feeling tired or weak.
  • Lowered interest in sex.

How is this medicine (Ethinyl Estradiol and Drospirenone) best taken?

  • Use ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.
  • Follow how to use as you have been told by the doctor or read the package insert.
  • Take ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone at the same time of day.
  • Take with or without food. Take with food if it causes an upset stomach.
  • If you drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit often, talk with your doctor.
  • Do not skip doses, even if you do not have sex very often.
  • If you throw up or have diarrhea, ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone may not work as well to prevent pregnancy. Use an extra form of birth control, like condoms, until you check with your doctor.
  • If you miss 2 periods in a row, take a pregnancy test before starting a new cycle.

Drospirenone & Ethinyl Estradiol Food Interactions

Medicines can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol.
