Sildenafil 100mg or 50mg?

sildenafil 100mgGeneric sildenafil citrate comes in preparations of 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. Your first prescription will usually be for 50mg, which is the recommended starting dose. At this dose you and your doctor can monitor your physical reaction to the medicine and address any side effects early on. If 50mg is very effective the dose can be reduced to 25mg. But, if well tolerated and only mediocre results are reported, men are then often upgraded to sildenafil 100mg.

Sildenafil (generic Viagra) becomes available

When Pfizer lost its UK patent for the drug in June 2013 it made way for generic manufacturers to produce sildenafil, or ‘generic Viagra’. It costs a fraction of the price of Viagra, and has made the treatment more accessible to a wider range of patients. You can now choose to buy Viagra, Pfizer’s branded drug, or sildenafil, the generic version.

Why is this medication prescribed?

Sildenafil (Viagra) is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence; inability to get or keep an erection) in men. Sildenafil (Revatio) is used to improve the ability to exercise in adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH; high blood pressure in the vessels carrying blood to the lungs, causing shortness of breath, dizziness, and tiredness). Children should not usually take sildenafil, but in some cases, a doctor may decide that sildenafil (Revatio) is the best medication to treat a child's condition. Sildenafil is in a class of medications called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. Sildenafil treats erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This increased blood flow can cause an erection. Sildenafil treats PAH by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs to allow blood to flow easily.

If you are taking sildenafil to treat erectile dysfunction, you should know that it does not cure erectile dysfunction or increase sexual desire. Sildenafil does not prevent pregnancy or the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Why is sildenafil cheaper than Viagra?

As a generic medicine, sildenafil is produced by a number of manufacturers, and competition among them helps to regulate its price and keep it affordable for consumers. Branded Viagra is only produced by Pfizer, whose name recognition and customer loyalty allow it to charge a higher price for its renowned ‘little blue pills’.

Dosage

For most patients, the recommended dose is 50 mg taken, as needed, approximately 1 hour before sexual activity. However, Viagra may be taken anywhere from 4 hours to 0.5 hour before sexual activity. Based on effectiveness and toleration, the dose may be increased to a maximum recommended dose of 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Viagra.

Storage

Store Viagra at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Viagra out of the reach of children and away from pets.

Blue or white pills?

Branded Viagra comes in small diamond-shaped blue pills – Pfizer has also patented this pill design and appearance. Sildenafil is sold as white or blue tablets, with different characteristics depending on the brand. Some have chalky finishes while others are smooth, and some are scored for easy division, while others are not. Both Viagra and the different brands of sildenafil can be purchased in 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg preparations, and there is no significant difference between them in terms of active ingredients.

Prices of sildenafil

Sildenafil is relatively cheap to produce, each tablet costing only a few pence to make. Pharmaceutical companies supplying sildenafil – since the patent of Viagra expired – now compete mainly on price and prices have come down dramatically. There is not much to choose in terms of wholesale price from one of the new producers of sildenafil to another, but compared with pre-patent expiry, prices have fallen a lot. The wholesale price is the price pharmacies pay. Patients pay a considerable mark-up, which varies from one pharmacy to another. Some online suppliers are much lower cost than others (compare prices of sildenafil).

The original brand of sildenafil from Pfizer, Viagra, is still available, but at the same high price as before, despite its market share shrinking. It remains popular only with men who can afford the original and who are reluctant to switch. Pfizer have also launched a generic sildenafil product as well.

Levitra (vardenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and the newer tablet Spedra (avanafil) are alternatives to sildenafil. Levitra and Spedra are all still under patent and are considerably more expensive.
