HCG Injections is an acronym for Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. Doctors prescribe HCG for a number of FDA approved reasons but they also prescribe the hormone as an “off label” weight loss aide.Physicians often prescribe medicine for a reasons other than their original intent. Aspirin is a pain reliever that became an off label treatment for heart disease. Many years later the FDA approved aspirin as an official treatment for heart disease. This does not always happen, sometimes the medicine remains an “off label” product.

How Does the HCG  Program Work

The HCG diet program is a 4 phase program that focuses on certain goals throughout each step.

Phase 1 of the HCG diet is a 2 day loading phase. While it seems odd, it is very important not to skip this part of the program. The loading phases is exactly as what it sounds like, you just eat whatever you like for days 1 and 2. This is also when you begin taking your HCG shots.

Phase 2 is the most challenging part of the program, lasting over 3 weeks usually. On the 3rd day you reduce your caloric intake to 500 calories a day. Not just that, you have a special diet that you consume within those 500 calories.

Phase 3 of the HCG diet plan is a maintenance phase. At this point you have used all of the HCG and you slowly increase your calories over a 3 week period. You should get to 1200/1500 calories a day but remain within a couple of pounds of your phase 2 weight. This is supposed to establish a new “set point” for you body to maintain.

Phase 4 of the HCG diet is known as “the rest of your life” phase. Your calories should be at a reasonable level and you can begin a fitness program. By now you should have developed a basic understanding of what to eat and you can adjust your plan to fit your needs.

How to Use it

Part of realizing the weight loss benefits of HCG is ensuring that you use it correctly. The "standard" way of using HCG is to combine it with a calorie restricted diet and to use it daily. It may be better to use smaller doses less frequently and combined with other therapies which also aid in weight loss. Using it in this way promotes more sustained weight loss and limits any potential negative side effects associated with the hormone. Below I've outlined some guidelines that can be considered when using HCG.

HCG Dosing instructions

  • Use only up to a maximum of 250 IU's and use them on intermittent fasting days (you can read more about my recommended usage of HCG in my weight loss guide here)
  • Use ONLY HCG injections (avoid HCG drops because they don't work)
  • Use a maximum of 3 injections per week (average of 2 injections per week works best for most people)
  • Use during weight loss phase only (you shouldn't continue using HCG if it isn't working)
  • Use only for a maximum of 2-3 months before taking a break (at least 1 month off) - from there you can cycle use
  • Stop using HCG when you reach your target goal
  • Use in the morning on the day that you decide to use it

HCG diet limitations and warnings

1) Muscle loss

A VERY important drawback to low-calorie regimens like the HCG diet is the fact that not only will you lose fat, but your body will break down valuable muscle necessary to stoke the flames of your metabolism.

2) Safety

A 500 calorie diet is very low energy and ideally should be supervised by a responsible bariatric physician or university-qualified dietitian (not a self-styled “nutritionist”). Generally speaking, a diet of less than 1200 calories is likely to be nutritionally deficient in terms of the main macronutrients (carbohydrate, protein, fat) and vitamins and minerals.

3) Unrealistic weight loss

Promotional materials for the HCG diet tout that you can expect to lose 1-2 pounds (1/2 to 1 kg) per day. Responsible health practitioners recommend a safe and healthy weight loss of approximately 1-2 pounds per week, NOT per day.

4) Hallmark signs of quackery

One website promotes “the HCG diet is considered one of the fastest and safest ways to lose weight and keep it off.
