Crestor 40mg is used to lower high cholesterol levels. Even though you may have normal cholesterol, Crestor 40mg can also be used to reduce the risk of you having a stroke or heart attack if you are a man 50 or more years old or a women 60 or more years old and have at least 2 risk factors for having a heart attack or stroke, such as high blood pressure, low levels of good cholesterol (HDL), smoking or a family history of premature coronary heart disease. Your doctor may also do a blood test to measure a substance called C Reactive Protein to help decide if you should be given Crestor 40mg for this use.

How To Work

Crestor 40mg Tablet is a lipid-lowering medication (statin). It works by blocking an enzyme (HMG-CoA-reductase) that is required in the body to make cholesterol. It thus lowers “bad” cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides and raises “good” cholesterol (HDL).

What Is Crestor 40mg

This Tablet is used to reduce the level of bad cholesterol in the body. It is also used in the treatment of long-term complications such as heart disease or stroke. A proper diet and regular exercise should be maintained along with taking this medicine. Moreover, this medicine is used in reducing the amount of cholesterol in children and patients between 10 to 17 years of age suffering from hypercholesterolemia (a genetic disorder).

How To Take

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. This Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

Mechanism Action Of Crestor 40mg

Rosuvastatin is a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase. HMG-CoA reductase catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, an early rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis. Rosuvastatin acts primarily in the liver. Decreased hepatic cholesterol concentrations stimulate the upregulation of hepatic low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors which increases hepatic uptake of LDL. Rosuvastatin also inhibits hepatic synthesis of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL).

The overall effect is a decrease in plasma LDL and VLDL. In vitro and in vivo animal studies also demonstrate that rosuvastatin exerts vasculoprotective effects independent of its lipid-lowering properties. Rosuvastatin exerts an anti-inflammatory effect on rat mesenteric microvascular endothelium by attenuating leukocyte rolling, adherence and transmigration.

Warning

Pregnancy – This is not recommended for use in pregnant women.

Cognitive impairment -This may cause forgetfulness, memory loss, confusion, etc. in some patients. These side effects are reversible and usually disappear once the medicine is discontinued.

Altered blood sugar levels – This may cause an alteration in the blood sugar levels. This risk is especially higher in patients with diabetes mellitus. Close monitoring of blood sugar levels may be necessary based on the clinical condition. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative should be done under your doctor’s supervision.

It should be taken in addition to regular exercise and low-fat diet to lower levels of fat in the blood.

It should be taken in the evening after dinner and before sleeping.

In general, Tablet is safe. However, some people may develop digestive problems like diarrhoea, gas. If any of these happen to you, take it with food.

Notify your doctor if you experience muscle symptoms (pain or weakness), joint pain, do not feel hungry, or if you have yellow eyes, skin or dark urine after starting the medication.
