Carvedilol Overview

Carvedilol is a prescription medication used to treat heart failure and high blood pressure. Carvedilol belongs to a group of drugs called beta blockers. It works to decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and the workload of the heart by blocking beta receptors.

This medication comes in tablet form and is taken twice a day with food and a full glass of water.

It is also available in controlled release capsules which are to be swallowed whole once a day with food and a full glass of water.  Do not chew, divide or crush carvedilol controlled release capsules. 

Common side effects of carvedilol include low blood pressure, weight gain, and fatigue. Carvedilol can cause dizziness. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how carvedilol affects you.

What should I avoid while taking carvedilol 25?

dizzy      Carvedilol may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

noalcohol            Avoid drinking alcohol within 2 hours before or after taking extended-release carvedilol (Coreg CR). Also avoid taking medicines or other products that might contain alcohol. Alcohol may cause the carvedilol in Coreg CR to be released too quickly into the body. Check the labels of any prescription or over-the-counter medicines you take to see if they contain alcohol (also called ethanol).

Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.

If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.Take this medication by mouth with food as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily.The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take 1 to 2 weeks before you get the full benefit of this drug. It is important to continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (for example, your blood pressure readings remain high or increase, or you have worsening symptoms of heart failure like increased shortness of breath).
