Imatib tablets 100mg are used to treat cancers in which there is a similar genetic abnormality resulting in loss of control of cell growth.

Leukaemia is a cancer of the white blood cell that develops in the bone marrow.  Several types of leukaemia are classified by the speed at which they grow; being acute if they are fast growing or chronic if they are slow growing.

Classification for leukaemia also depends on the type of cell affected; lymphoblastic leukaemia develops from the lymphocytic cells, which form the white cells of the immune system; or myeloid leukaemia, which develops from the myelogenous cells that form the red blood cells, white cells and platelets.

Imatib tablets 100mg are used to treat adults and children with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) that is newly diagnosed or after failure of interferon therapy; also newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in adults and children in combination with chemotherapy or as monotherapy in adults with relapsed or refractory (difficult to treat) ALL.

CML and ALL are positive for the Philadelphia chromosome, which is a specific chromosomal abnormality that results in uncontrolled growth of white blood cells.

Myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative diseases are blood cancers caused by either over-production or abnormal development of bone marrow myeloid cells.

2. What is Imatib 100mg Tablets?

Imatib tablets 100mg are used to treat some of these cancers associated with gene re-arrangements in the platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) gene.

Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) and chronic eosinophilic leukaemia (CEL) are also rare myeloproliferative blood cancers characterised by high numbers of eosinophils, which are white cells that originate in the bone marrow and are important in the inflammation process and the fight against infection.

HES and CEL can cause multiple organ damage and are associated with a mutation in the FIP1L1/PDGFRA gene leading to an abnormal receptor for a specific growth factor and loss of regulation of cell growth in these cancers.  Imatib tablets 100mg can be effective in HES and CEL with or without this genetic abnormality.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare sarcoma type of cancer that develops in the middle dermal layer of the skin and penetrates deep into the lower layers of the skin.

It is another cancer caused by a genetic abnormality in a growth factor receptor gene, in this case PDGFRA which results in cells that that are continually stimulated to grow and differentiation.  Imatib tablets 100mg are used to treat unresectable, recurrent and/or metastatic DFSP.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) is a rare form of sarcoma that develops usually in the stomach from the supporting stromal tissue.

Most GISTs have a mutation in the mast cell growth factor receptor gene (c-kit CD117).  Imatib tablets 100mg are used to treat unresectable (untreatable) and/or metastatic malignant GIST that are Kit positive.

All these cancers are the result of loss of normal control in cell growth and enhanced cell survival due to a mutation in a gene coding for a specific growth factor cell surface receptor.  Imatib 100 works in a similar way to inhibit the abnormal signals that result in uncontrolled growth of these cancers.
