It belongs to the group of medications called xanthine oxidase inhibitors. The medicine works by decreasing the level of uric acid by blocking the xanthine oxidase enzyme. This enzyme helps the body to make uric acid from xanthine. When there are high levels of uric acid in the blood, it can lead to gout and the symptoms associated with it.

Your dosage of Febutaz 40 MG Tablet depends on your age, the condition for which you are being treated and it’s severity, your medical history and reaction to the first dose. It is available in tablet form to be taken by mouth. You can have the medicine with food or without it. Usually, it is taken once in a day but follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the dosage.

Your doctor must be informed if you ever had a medical history of cancer, liver disease, heart disease, kidney disease, organ transplantation or a stroke before being prescribed to Febutaz 40 MG Tablet. Also, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or a breastfeeding mother. The medicine can pass on to the baby through breast milk.

Febuxostat can be taken with or without food.

If your physician has instructed or directed you to take Febuxostat medication in a regular schedule and you have missed a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. Breast-feeding - No clear data is available about the presence of this medicine in the human breast milk. Consult your doctor about the potential benefits and risks before deciding to take this medicine.

Gout flare - Gout flares may occur after initiation of the treatment due to change in the serum uric acid levels. Discontinue the treatment until the symptoms completely subsided. Simultaneously gout flare prophylaxis with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or colchicine should be initiated for up to 6 months.

Cardiovascular events - This medicine in not recommended in the patients with ischemic heart disease due to the risk of cardiovascular thromboembolic events like myocardial infarction, stroke.

Impaired liver function - This medicine is known to cause liver failure. Obtain baseline of liver function tests before initiation of the treatment. The treatment should be discontinued if the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is greater than 3 times the reference range.

Impaired kidney function - This medicine should be used with caution in the patients with severe kidney injury (CrCl less than 30 ml/min).

Asymptomatic hyperuricemia - This medicine is not recommended for use in the patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia.

9. Precaution of Febutaz 40mg tablet

Your doctor has prescribed Febutaz to reduce episodes of gout attack.

Take Febutaz at the same time every day, with or without food.

Take plenty of fluids (2-3 litres) daily while on Febutaz.

Notify your doctor if you develop a rash. This could be a sign of allergy and should go away on discontinuing Febutaz.

To ensure that Febutaz is working, you may have to undergo blood tests regularly.

When you first start taking Febutaz, you might have more gout attacks. Do not stop Febutaz on having an acute attack of gout as that could make an attack worse.

10. Febutaz 40mg Dosage

Contact a doctor immediately if an overdose is suspected. Symptoms of overdose may include a change in pulse rates, severe drowsiness, confusion, vomiting, hallucinations, convulsions, and fainting. Immediate medical intervention may be required if the overdose symptoms are severe.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose then the missed dose should be skipped.
