What is dicloxacillin?

Dicloxacillin is a penicillin antibiotic that fights bacteria in your body.

Dicloxacillin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria such as bronchitis, pneumonia, or staphylococcal (also called "staph") infections.

Uses of Dicloxacillin

  • Bronchitis
  • Pharyngitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Skin or soft tissue infection
  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infection
  • Osteomyelitis

Dosage

Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Dicloxacillin will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical treatment or contact the doctor in case of an overdose.

Dicloxacillin Side Effects

In addition to its intended effect, Dicloxacillin may cause some unwanted effects too. In such cases, you must seek medical attention immediately. This is not an exhaustive list of side effects. Please inform your doctor if you experience any adverse reaction to the medication.

  • Nausea
  • Allergic reaction
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • little or no urination;
  • unusual bleeding or bruising;
  • a seizure (convulsions);
  • mouth pain or irritation, black tongue, sore throat; or
  • fever, swollen glands, rash or itching, joint pain, or general ill feeling.

Common side effects may include:

  • heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • blisters or ulcers in your mouth, red or swollen gums, trouble swallowing; or
  • abnormal liver function tests.

Interactions

Avoid concomitant tetracyclines, aminoglycosides. Serum levels increased by probenecid. May reduce anticoagulant response: monitor PT.

Pregnancy - This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless absolutely necessary. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine. Your doctor may prescribe a safer alternative based on your clinical condition.

Breast-feeding - This medicine is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine. If the medicine is used, the infant should be monitored closely for any adverse effects.
