What is dexamethasone?

Dexamethasone is a prescription medication. It comes as an oral tablet, oral solution, eye drops, and eardrops. It also comes as an injectable solution or an intraocular solution given after surgery. These last two forms are only given by a healthcare provider.

The dexamethasone oral tablet is available as the brand-name drugs DexPak and Decadron. It's also available as a generic drug. Generic drugs usually cost less than the brand-name version. In some cases, they may not be available in all strengths or forms as the brand-name drug.
