Uses

Clarithromycin is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication can also be used in combination with anti-ulcer medications to treat certain types of stomach ulcers. It may also be used to prevent certain bacterial infections. Clarithromycin is known as a macrolide antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Clarithromycin is used in the treatment of Bronchitis which is an inflammation in lungs caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and some Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Pneumonia

Clarithromycin is used in the treatment of Pneumonia which is a common type of lung infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae.

General Instructions

Take Clarithromycin with or without food. The long-acting tablet should be taken with food. Do not take in larger amounts than advised. Consult the doctor if you experience any undesirable effects. Do not stop taking Clarithromycin before completion of course.

Warnings

Pregnancy - This medicine is not recommended for use during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Consult your doctor about the potential benefits and risks before deciding to take this medicine.

Breast-feeding - This medicine is not recommended for breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary. Consult your doctor about the potential benefits and risks before deciding to take this medicine. Monitoring of undesired effects like diarrhea, candidiasis (thrush, diaper rash) is necessary.

Impaired liver function - Clarithromycin is not recommended in the patients with the history of liver injury. Any signs and symptoms of liver injury like elevated liver enzymes and yellow colored eyes and skin should be reported to the doctor. Discontinue the medicine if the symptoms persist.

QT prolongation - Clarithromycin should be used with caution in the patients receiving QT prolongation medications as it can increase the risk of arrhythmia. Frequent monitoring of heart function is necessary and an alternate medicine should be considered.
