Description

Cerazette Tablet is used to prevent a pregnancy. This medicine is not recommended for use in patients less than 18 years of age since the safety and efficacy of use are not clinically established.

Cerazette 0.075Mg Tablet is a synthetic progestin used as an oral contraceptive and its main function is prevention of pregnancy. It is a birth control drug and is used alone as a pregosterone-only contraceptive, known as “mini-pills” or in combination with ethinylestradiol in combined oral contraceptives.

In a woman’s normal menstrual cycle, after ovulation progesterone is secreted by the ovary to prevent further release of eggs. In case of pregnancy, progesterone levels remain high to maintain uterine endometrium, and in absence of pregnancy progesterone levels fall. By maintaining high levels of progesterone artificially, Cerazette 0.075Mg Tablet tricks the body into thinking that ovulation has already occurred, which in turn inhibits release of eggs. Cerazette 0.075Mg Tablet binds to progesterone receptors in target cells and inhibits the release of gonadotropin releasing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone and prevents the surge in luteinizing hormone before menstruation.

What Cerazette is and what it is used for

Cerazette is used to prevent pregnancy. There are 2 main kinds of hormone contraceptive.

The combined pill, "The Pill", which contains 2 types of female sex hormone an oestrogen and a progestogen,

The progestogen-only pill, POP, which doesn't contain an oestrogen.Cerazette is a progestogen-only-pill (POP).Cerazette contains a small amount of one type of female sex hormone, the progestogen desogestrel.

Most POPs work primarily by preventing the sperm cells from entering the womb but they do not always prevent the egg cell from ripening, which is the main way that combined pills work.

Cerazette is different from most POPs in having a dose that in most cases prevents the egg cell from ripening. As a result, Cerazette is a highly effective contraceptive.

In contrast to the combined pill, Cerazette can be used by women who do not tolerate oestrogens and by women who are breast feeding. A disadvantage is that vaginal bleeding may occur at irregular intervals during the use of Cerazette. On the other hand you may not have any bleeding at all.

How does Cerazette (desogestrel) work?

Cerazette works mainly by preventing the release of the egg from the ovary. It also works by increasing the thickness of the mucus at the neck of the womb so making it harder for sperm to get into the womb and fertilise an egg. Finally Cerazette affects the quality of the lining of the womb so making successful implantation of a fertilised egg less likely. As a result pregnancy is less likely.

There are two main kinds of hormonal contraceptive pills.

The combined pill, "The Pill", contains twotypes of female sex hormone, oestrogen and progestogen, alternatively, the progestogen-only pill (POP) or mini-pill, doesn't contain any oestrogen.

Progestogen-only pills (POPs) are considered to have fewer side effects and health risks when compared to combined pills, but are also considered to be slightly less effective. They must also be taken every day, without a break (unlike some combined pills), and it's very important that they are taken at the same time each day.
