Description

Cefixime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a variety of conditions like urinary tract infections, ear infections and lung infections caused by bacteria. It has the advantage of once-daily dosing. This medicine is not recommended for use in case of common cold, flu or viral infections since it is active against the infections caused by certain bacterial species only.

Uses

Cefixime is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.

How to use Cefixime Tablet

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once a day. In children, this medication may also be taken twice a day (every 12 hours). If you are taking the chewable tablets, chew thoroughly and then swallow.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. In children, the dosage is also based on weight.

For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time(s) every day.

Continue to use this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.

Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

How does cefixime work?

Cefixime is a type of antibiotic called a cephalosporin. It works by interfering with the formation of bacterial cell walls. Cefixime impairs the bonds that hold the bacterial cell wall together, which allows holes to appear in the cell walls. This kills off the bacteria causing the infection.

Cefixime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which means it kills a wide variety of different types of bacteria.
