We have heard the phrase “apple of my eyes.”However, some people literally take the molded form of the above phrase as “sugar of my eyes.”

The phrase stands true for all the diabetic patients with high sugar level who end up hurting their eyes to follow it.

Well, jokes apart— diabetic patients are easy targets against comorbid diseases related to eyes.

If you have been facing eye issues, it’s because diabetes continues to deteriorate medical condition which also includes your eyes. So, let’s sail through all the eye diseases caused diabetes.

Unfocused and vague vision

Diabetes changes the way you see in the surrounding environment. It does blur the image which later makes things unfocused and vague for you.

The primary lens principle says that “the image gets blurred when the size of the lens grows.”Something similar happens during diabetes.

When the amount of blood sugar level goes beyond the par level, the lenses of the eyes bloat.

The swollen form of lens gathers the light but couldn’t focus the image on the focal point which, in turn, leads to indistinctiveness.

Although it’s not a permanent condition, any negligence in controlling your sugar level may prolong the action of it which would further promote the difficulty in vision.

You can’t treat it overnight; however, with managing your sugar level, you may regain your proper sight.

The cloudy vision— cataract

Though cataract is common in non-diabetic patients too, diabetic patients are massively vulnerable to receiving cataract.

Generally, aqueous humor sends the necessary oxygen in the eyes; however, with unconstrained sugar level in the blood, the humor also pushes the glucose in the eyes.

When the eye lens gets exposed to glucose and oxygen at the same time, it starts swelling the lens.

The swollen lens blurs the image interpretation which left untreated over the long course may develop into a cataract.

You can’t undo cataract with controlling the sugar level; instead, you will have to fix it through eye surgery. The surgery replaces the original eye lenses with artificial ones.

Diabetic retinopathy

It’s one of the severe vision issues pushed in by diabetes.Akin to diabetic neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy damages the nerves and small blood vessels in the retina.

Eyes work as a camera which capture the light on the retina, send the image to the brain via optical nerves,  the brain interprets the picture, and give us the final display.

The uncontrolled presence of glucose in the eye region destroys the blood vessels of the retina which may further cause severe vision problems like blindness.

In simpler terms, your retina gets detached with the blood vessels which connect it with the brain, therefore impeding the signal flow.

There are three types of retinopathy. They are Background Retinopathy, Proliferative Retinopathy, Maculopathy.

Glaucoma

As diabetes retinopathy damages the tiny blood vessels which connect the retina and the optic nerve, the retina starts establishing its own path. The new path set up by retina may not be normal.

These abnormal blood vessels manufactured by retina may enter the iris region— the colored section of your eyes.

As a result, the liquid, i.e., aqueous humor in the eyes don’t get sufficient space to flow.

With the stagnant liquid humor or the lack of free flow in the eyeballs, your eyes start feeling heavy and observe the pressure.

The problem with Glaucoma is— it is more often than not painless, and you can’t confirm its existence until you completely lose the vision.

Glaucoma is usually treated with Bimatoprost which eases the flow of aqueous humor in the eyes and lowers the pressure.

It’s why people are recommended to go for routine health checkup because a slight delay might transpire the unsolicited adversaries which definitely won’t go well with your standard of living.

There’s no guarantee that cutting down the sugar level will reverse the eye conditions; however, precautions right after the diagnosis may prevent your vision.
