Used to reduce bacteria in the intestines, Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Neomycin is not to be used if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or to other aminoglycosides such as gentamicin. If you have bowel ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease or any intestinal obstruction, the drug is not advised to be taken. Medicines like penicillin and fludarabine and can interfere with its functioning.

Neomycin is to be taken orally with or without food. Do not use it for more than two weeks unless advised by your doctor. Continue using it for the full course of treatment to clear off the infection, even if you feel better.

How do betamethasone and neomycin cream and ointment work?

Betamethasone is a type of medicine called a topical corticosteroid. It works by stopping skin cells releasing various inflammatory substances that make blood vessels widen and cause the skin to become red, swollen, itchy and painful. It reduces the swelling, redness and itching and so helps prevent scratching that can further irritate the skin.
