About Azithromycine

Azithromycine is an antibiotic of the macrolide type that is taken orally. One of the worlds highest-selling medicines, Azithromycine is used in treating infections caused by bacteria, such as some Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), bronchitis, and infections found in the ears, lungs, and throat. This medicament works by inhibiting the growth of proteins that feed on bacteria, causing them to die out. Note that this medicament cannot treat viral infections, such as colds and flu. Its more popular brand names are Zithromax and Ventrox.

People suffering from abnormal heartbeats, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), kidney or liver illness, or cystic fibrosis should be advised by their doctor before taking Azithromycine. This medicament is not recommended for people taking anticoagulants, also known as blood thinners, or any immunosuppresants. Combining these with Azithromycine may be harmful.

Azithromycine is available in two forms: as a tablet or as a liquid suspension, both are taken orally and are usually taken once or twice a day for one to five days. If your physician prescribes otherwise, follow his prescription strictly. Otherwise, the bacteria in your body may eventually become immune to the medicament. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, do not take more than the prescribed amount at one time to compensate. This medicament may be taken with or without food. The pills should always be taken with a full glass of water. The liquid suspension must be mixed well before being taken.

Why is this medication prescribed?

Azithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as bronchitis; pneumonia; sexually transmitted diseases (STD); and infections of the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, throat, and reproductive organs. Azithromycin also is used to treat or prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection [a type of lung infection that often affects people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)]. Azithromycin is in a class of medications called macrolide antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
