About azithromycin

Azithromycin is an antibiotic.

It's widely used to treat chest infections such as pneumonia, infections of the nose and throat such as sinusitis, skin infections, Lyme disease, and some sexually transmitted infections.

Azithromycin is used in children, often to treat ear infections or chest infections.

It can also be used long term to prevent chest infections in people who keep getting them.

The medicine is available on prescription as capsules, tablets and a liquid that you drink. It can also be given by injection, but this is usually only done in hospital.

Azithromycin is also used to treat lung and other respiratory infections, such as bronchitis, sinusitis, community acquired pneumonia, some cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and whooping cough (pertussis).

Doctors may also prescribe azithromycin for genital infections and sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhea, infections of the urethra or cervix, genital ulcers, and severe pelvic inflammatory disease.

Azithromycin belongs to group of drugs known as macrolide antibiotics. They work by preventing bacteria from making their own proteins.

A review of the literature found that the most sensitive symptoms and signs for the diagnosis of acute sinusitis were maxillary toothache, a poor response to decongestants, a coloured nasal discharge (symptoms), purulent nasal discharge and abnormal maxillary sinus transillumination (signs).
