Azithromycin For Sinus Infection

azithromycin for sinus infection

Introduction

Strep throat is an infection of your throat and tonsils, the two small tissue masses in the back of your throat. The infection can cause symptoms such as sore throat, swollen glands, fever, loss of appetite, and white spots on your tonsils.

Strep throat is caused by bacteria, so it’s treated with an antibiotic. Treatment with an antibiotic can shorten the amount of time you have strep throat symptoms and decrease the spread of infection to other people. Z-Pak is a form of the brand-name drug Zithromax. It’s an antibiotic that can treat strep throat, though it’s not a common choice for this infection.

Warnings/Precautions

Pneumonia: oral treatment is for mild, community-acquired cases suitable for outpatient therapy only. Discontinue if signs/symptoms of hepatitis occur. Known QT prolongation, proarrhythmic conditions, clinically significant bradycardia: avoid. Allergic symptoms may recur after initial successful symptomatic treatment. Myasthenia gravis. Hepatic or renal impairment. Elderly. Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers.

Azithromycin Interactions

It is always important to share with your doctor and pharmacist all of the medications you are taking.

This includes not only all of your prescription medicine, but also products that may not seem like medication, such as over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and other dietary supplements (nutritional shakes, protein powders, etc.), and herbals along with any legal or illegal recreational drugs.

Azithromycin Dosage

Azithromycin is taken as a pill or liquid. It's also given as intravenous (IV) injection in hospitals. Packets of powder are mixed with water to create the liquid solution.

Azithromycin may be taken with or without food.

Doctors sometimes prescribe azithromycin for shorter periods than they do for other antibiotics, such as in a one-day "mega-dose," or for three or five days, using the Z-Pak, which starts at a higher dose than longer regimens.

Side effects

As with any medication, azithromycin can cause side effects. Some of the more common side effects include:

  • diarrhea
  • stomach pain
  • nausea and vomiting
  • headache

Less common and more serious side effects can also occur when taking azithromycin. Call your doctor right away if you have any of these side effects:

  • allergic reaction, with symptoms such as skin rash or swelling of your lips or tongue
  • yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes
  • easy bleeding or bruising
  • severe diarrhea or diarrhea that doesn’t go away
  • heart rhythm problems

Diagnosis

The symptoms and signs of acute sinusitis are nasal obstruction, facial pain, dental pain, purulent rhinorrhoea, sinus tenderness and in some cases systemic manifestations such as fever and malaise. A review of the literature found that the most sensitive symptoms and signs for the diagnosis of acute sinusitis were maxillary toothache, a poor response to decongestants, a coloured nasal discharge (symptoms), purulent nasal discharge and abnormal maxillary sinus transillumination (signs). One of the common problems facing the doctor is differentiating an acute upper respiratory tract infection (the common cold) from acute sinusitis as there is considerable overlap of the symptoms and signs .

The gold standard for the diagnosis of acute bacterial sinusitis remains aspiration of pus from one of the major sinuses. As the maxillary sinuses are the most accessible to aspiration and also the most commonly involved sinus in acute sinusitis, they were the most commonly aspirated sinuses. Nowadays maxillary sinus puncture and aspiration is seldom performed as the procedure can be painful.
