Azithromycin is an antibiotic that stops the growth of bacteria that can cause infections such as:

  • pneumonia
  • bronchitis

  • sexually transmitted diseases
  • sinus infections

Serious side effects

Call your doctor right away if you have serious side effects. Call 911 if your symptoms feel life-threatening or if you think you’re having a medical emergency. Serious side effects can include:

  • Liver problems. Symptoms can include:
  • tiredness or weakness
  • loss of appetite
  • pain in your upper stomach
  • dark urine
  • yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes

It only treats these or other infections if they’re caused bacteria. It doesn’t treat infections caused by a virus or fungus.

Azithromycin comes in oral tablets, oral capsules, oral suspension, eye drops, and an injectable form. You can usually take the oral forms with or without food.

Chlamydia Treatment

Order an antibiotic to treat chlamydia

You can order yourself an antibiotic treatment online if you or a partner has tested positive for chlamydia.

The antibiotic treatment is almost always (95% of the time) effective in treating chlamydia.

We offer two antibiotics, azithromycin and doxycycline. Azithromycin is taken as a single dose, doxycycline is taken as a one week course.

To place an order, fill in our brief questionnaire and select your preferred treatment. Our doctor will review your order and approve appropriate treatment.

We also offer a home test kit.

Alternative treatment for chlamydia

Azithromycin is the first line recommended treatment for chlamydia in the UK. The alternative antibiotic most often used to treat chlamydia is doxycycline 100mg taken twice daily for 7 days. Azithromycin as a single dose is a more appealing treatment for most patients and doctors; compliance with a single dose treatment being likely to be better.

Azithromycin for chlamydia

There is an NHS campaign to increase awareness, testing and treatment of chlamydia. People in the UK under the age of 25 can get free chlamydia testing and treatment. Genitourinary clinics and GPs surgeries and some private and charitable clinics carry out testing and provide treatment. As yet the NHS chlamydia campaigns do not include an option to obtain antibiotic treatment online despite this treatment having been available online privately for close to a decade.

Effects from alcohol and azithromycin

Azithromycin starts to work quickly, often within the first couple of days after you start taking it. You’ll probably feel well enough to resume your normal activities soon after you start the drug. Still, you may want to hold off from enjoying your favorite cocktails until you finish treatment.

Alcohol doesn’t appear to reduce the effectiveness of azithromycin. A study done on rats published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research found that alcohol doesn’t prevent azithromycin from treating the bacterial infection.

That said, drinking alcohol can cause temporary liver damage in some people. This may increase the severity of some of the unpleasant side effects of this drug. Alcohol is also dehydrating. Dehydration can increase the risk of side effects or make them worse if you already have them. These side effects can include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • stomach pain
  • headache
