Apixaban Brand Name

Apixaban Brand Name

Apixaban is used to treat or prevent deep venous thrombosis, a condition in which harmful blood clots form in the blood vessels of the legs. These blood clots can travel to the lungs and can become lodged in the blood vessels of the lungs, causing a condition called pulmonary embolism. This medicine is used for several days after hip or knee replacement surgery while you are unable to walk. It is during this time that blood clots are most likely to form.

Labeled Use Stroke prophylaxis and systemic embolism prophylaxis in patientswith nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.Unlabeled UsesTo reduce the risk of recurrent DVT and/or PE (in patientscompleting 6-12 months of standard anticoagulation for venous thromboembolism).2Postoperative DVT prophylaxis for arthroplasty of the knee.4prophylaxis for total hip replacement.

How popular is Eliquis?

Eliquis (apixaban) is the second most popular anticoagulant, a class of medications that also includes Coumadin (jantoven, warfarin), Xarelto, and Pradaxa. Commonly referred to as blood thinners, drugs in this class help to prevent blood clots that can cause deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, angina, stroke and heart attack.

When will generic Eliquis be available?

There are two things keeping generic Eliquis off the market for now. First, the FDA has granted Eliquis market exclusivity, which expires on December 24, 2017 (Market exclusivity prevents competitors from submitting new drug applications). There is also a patent on Eliquis which expires in February 2023. The patent prevents competitors from manufacturing and distributing alternatives.

This study was funded by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer. Many of theauthors were affiliated with or employed by Bristol-Myers Squibb, which introduces apotential for bias. In noninferiority trials such as this one, it is usually recommended thata per protocol analysis as well as an intention-to-treat analysis be performed. This trialdid not include a per protocol analysis. In this study, the time in therapeutic range forwarfarin (65%) was higher than other agents that have been compared to warfarin. However, the time in therapeutic range may be even higher for patients who have theirwarfarin managed by anticoagulation clinics.

Side effects

Apixaban can increase the risk of bleeding which may be serious and potentially fatal. Concurrent use with drugs that affect hemostasis can further increase this risk. This includes drugs such as other anticoagulants, heparin, aspirin, antiplatelet drugs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)[5]

One concern with the use of apixaban and the other newer anticoagulants is the absence of well-established protocol for reversal of their activity (no antidote is available). This is an important disadvantage relative to warfarin when bleeding complications occur, or when people taking the drugs require emergency surgery.

Before taking apixaban, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver disease, kidney disease, bleeding problems (such as bleeding of the stomach/intestines, bleeding in the brain), blood disorders (such as anemia, hemophilia, thrombocytopenia), recent major injury/surgery, stroke, frequent falls/injuries.

This study shows that apixaban is superior to warfarin in preventing strokeand systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation or flutter and atleast one additional risk factor for stroke. This study also showed that apixaban resultedin both a statistically and clinically significant lower rate of major and clinically relevantnonmajor bleeding events compared to warfarin. Further studies are needed to determine appropriate doses in those with severe renal impairment, creatinine clearance <25mLs/min, and those with hepatic impairment.
