Onion (Allium cepa) Health Benefits

One of the most common ingredients in everyday cooking, onions are actually an awesome health food.

The main compounds found in onion are the flavonoids such as quercetin, which are natural phenolic compounds present in fruits and vegetables, exhibiting many pharmacological properties such as its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Along with flavanols, the major bioactive constituents in onions are sulfurous compounds. The sulfoxides, which are responsible for the onion flavor and odor, might also be responsible in part for the onion biological activity.

Asthma 

One study observed a reduction in the production of inflammatory cytokines, a relaxation of tracheal rings. It was concluded that onions have potential as antiasthmatic drugs, as they possess both immuno-modulatory and bronchodilatory properties. (1)

Cancer

Studies suggest the extract from onion may be useful against cancer.

Mechanistic studies indicate potential mechanisms of the anticancer activity of various Allium vegetable extracts and preparations and highlight the activities of the sulfur-containing compounds. These compounds have effects at each stage of carcinogenesis (cancer growth) and affect many physiological processes that modify cancer risk.

Blood sugar and fats

Onion oil has been reported to effectively decrease the lipid levels in experimental animals. Study results indicate that onion decreased blood glucose, serum lipid levels, and reduced Kidney oxidative stress and this effect might exert the anti-diabetic effect of onion. Blood fat lowering effect of onion can be one of the mechanisms of anti-diabetic effects and contribute to the prevention of diabetic kidney damage.

How does it work?

Onion contains chemicals that seem to reduce swelling (inflammation), reduce lung tightness in people with asthma, and reduce levels of cholesterol and sugar in the blood.

Method

Saturate a cotton pad with the onion juice.

Use the saturated cotton pad to dab your scalp with the onion juice.

Once your entire scalp is covered, massage your scalp for a couple of minutes.

Leave the juice on for about 15 minutes to an hour.

Wash your hair with a mild shampoo.

On alternate days.

Special Precautions & Warnings:

Bleeding disorder: Onion might slow blood clotting. There is concern that onion might increase the risk of bleeding when taken as a medicine. Don't use medicinal amounts of onion or onion extract if you have a bleeding disorder.

Cross-allergens: People with allergies to mugwort and celery might also be allergic to onion. Don't use in medicinal amounts if you have these allergies.

Diabetes: Onion might lower blood sugar. If you have diabetes and use onion in medicinal amounts, check your blood sugar carefully.

Surgery to place a pouch near the anus (ileal pouch-anal anastomosis): People that have had surgery to place a pouch near the anus might find that onion increases feelings of gas. Don't eat large amounts of onion if you have had this surgery.

Indigestion: People that experience indigestion often find that eating onion increases symptoms. Don't eat large amounts of onion if it increases your symptoms.
