Alpha blockers relax certain muscles and help small blood vessels remain open. They work by keeping the hormone norepinephrine (noradrenaline) from tightening the muscles in the walls of smaller arteries and veins, which causes the vessels to remain open and relaxed. This improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure.
Because alpha blockers also relax other muscles throughout the body, these medications can help improve urine flow in older men with prostate problems.
Symptoms Of Alpha Blockers
Alpha blockers are usually prescribed to help with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) for enlarged prostate, called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). These drugs work by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and the neck of the bladder so that urine flows more easily.
Alpha blockers are usually prescribed for men who have moderate to severe BPH symptoms. The ability of alpha blockers to help with urine voiding also leads to less pressure and less inflammation, which may result in less prostate pain for the patient. These benefits are why alpha blockers are also prescribed for prostatitis patients. Also, since it is estimated that one in five patients with BPH may also suffer from prostatitis, alpha blockers could help those patients who have both conditions.
While there is not much data regarding use of alpha blockers for acute bacterial prostatitis, anecdotal evidence suggests that alpha blockers for prostatitis can be helpful if the patient experiences obstructive voiding symptoms.
For chronic bacterial prostatitis, patients usually take antibiotics long term. Combining alpha blockers with antibiotics may improve the therapy and reduce the risk of recurrence compared to taking just antibiotics. A retrospective and uncontrolled study found that alpha blockers combined with antibiotics significantly reduced both clinical and bacteriologic recurrence of chronic bacterial prostatitis.
Causes Of Alpha Blockers
1. Older age: Adults over the age of 35 are at a higher risk for having high blood pressure.
2. Family history: If either your parents or grandparents had high blood pressure, there is an increased chance of developing high blood pressure.
3. Overweight/obesity: If you are obese or overweight there is increased risk of suffering from hypertension.
4. Diet: If your diet regularly consists of foods that are high in sugar or fat content and low in minerals and fibers then you are putting your body at increased risk of developing hypertension. Increased sodium intake (which comes from salt) increases the risk of hypertension.
5. Lack of exercise: Reduced physical activity increases your weight which in turn increases your risk of hypertension.
6. Drinking too much alcohol regularly: Drinking more than two alcoholic drinks per day, increases your chance of having high blood pressure.

Prevention Of Alpha Blockers
You have been prescribed Prazosin for the treatment of high blood pressure.
Lowering blood pressure reduces chances of future heart attack & strokes.
It may cause sudden drop in your blood pressure, especially when you first start taking Prazosin. To lower the chance of feeling dizzy or passing out, rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down.
Do not consume alcohol while taking Prazosin as it may enhance the blood pressure lowering effect of this medicine causing increased dizziness.
Use caution while driving or doing anything that requires concentration as Prazosin can cause dizziness and sleepiness.
Inform your doctor that you are taking Prazosin if you are scheduled for a cataract surgery.
Diagnosis Of Alpha Blockers
Most people with high blood pressure (hypertension) need to take medication for life. However, in some people whose blood pressure has been well controlled for three years or more, medication may be able to be stopped. In particular, in people who have made significant changes to lifestyle (such as having lost a lot of weight or having stopped smoking or heavy drinking, etc). Your doctor can advise you.
For people with symptoms caused by prostate gland enlargement, alpha-blockers are also usually taken long-term. Your doctor will usually review your symptoms every 4-6 weeks after you start treatment. Once your symptoms have settled down, your treatment is usually reviewed every year. This is to make sure it is still working.Alpha Blockers
